Joint operations command (JOC) spokesman Brig-Gen Yahya Rasool told state TV on Sunday that Iraqi forces were advancing towards the old centre of the city from the south and south-west.
But more than 45,000 people have been forced to flee the city in the last two weeks, the International Organisation for Migration says.
The IOM, the UN migration agency, says more than 200,000 people have been displaced by the fighting since October last year, with a new exodus beginning on 25 February.
