One of Brazil’s largest newspapers is reporting on an alleged cover-up scheme involving President Michel Temer and the jailed former speaker of the lower house of Congress, without saying how it obtained the information.
O Globo reported that executives from JBS, a meat-packing company, have submitted a tape to the Supreme Court of a secret recording of Temer approving payment to Eduardo Cunha, who was instrumental in the impeachment of former president Dilma Rousseff. Repeated calls and e-mails to the presidency’s press office went unanswered. Both JBS and its holding company, J&F, declined to comment.
The allegations are the latest development in Operation Carwash, a sprawling corruption probe that has implicated many of Brazil’s business and political elite, including some in the president’s own party. Temer has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
O Globo’s report caused an immediate stir in Congress, where opposition congressmen started to shout anti-government slogans. The session was subsequently suspended. Temer is currently in a meeting with media aides, according to the president’s press office.
