How in heck could someone have done this? Police and animal-welfare officials are investigating after a cute poodle was found inside a locked suitcase dumped in a ditch in a suburb of Vancouver, Canada.
According to a report on the website of the Richmond Animal Protection Society (RAPS), police delivered the dog to the shelter after a passerby heard it crying in a hard-shell piece of baggage on Sunday “The finder pried open the suitcase … and found a dog inside,” said a statement on the website.
The dog “had been in its urine and feces, but otherwise seemed in good health.
The finder brought him home and provided food and water.
” According to the statement, staff members examined the dog, which they have named Donut.
“He was discovered to be an unaltered male Apricot Poodle,” the statement continued, “recently groomed, in good condition, friendly, about six years old.
” “He was very, very lucky that he was found,” Eyal Lichtmann, CEO of RAPS, told the Vancouver Sun.
“This is absolute cruelty … to do this to a beautiful little poodle, who is the friendliest dog in the world.
” RELATED STORIES The society said it believed the dog had been in the case, on the hottest day of the year so far, from three to six hours.
“There is no reason why this type of cruelty need happen,” the statement continued.
“Anyone can surrender their animal for any reason at the Richmond Animal Shelter.
RAPS will gladly take the animal, provide it care and rehome the animal.
” In addition to Donut, the society said, a 7-week-old white kitten with blue eyes was found abandoned the same day in a Pampers diaper box.
Donut is doing well, the society said.
“He is very active, happy and friendly.
He ate well and drank.
He has been examined by our in-house vet, Dr.
Guy Arad, and found to be in good health despite the traumatizing incident.
The dog will be held by RAPS while an animal cruelty investigation takes place.
He will then be put up for adoption.
