Benin’s government suspended the mayor of the West African nation’s biggest city on suspicion that he sold public land and collected income without permission from the municipal authorities.
Mayor Lehady Soglo of Cotonou is also accused of destroying official documents, according to an emailed copy of a decree from Barnabe Dassigli, the country’s minister of decentralization and local governance.
Following the announcement on Friday, Soglo told reporters that he rejects the allegations.
He is the son of ex-President Nicephore Soglo.
