President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner used a personal email account in addition to his White House one to communicate with other White House officials, his lawyer said.
Kushner used the private email address to send fewer than 100 emails to other White House aides between January and August, Kushner’s lawyer Abbe Lowell said in a statement. Most of the email exchanges were related to news articles and “political commentary,” Lowell said.
The emails “most often occurred when someone initiated the exchange by sending an email to his personal, rather than his White House, address,” said Lowell. “All non-personal emails were forwarded to his official address and all have been preserved in any event.”
Trump made opponent Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server and handling of classified information as secretary of state a cornerstone of his attacks on her during the 2016 presidential campaign. Under the Presidential Records Act, all presidential records are required to be archived. Kushner didn’t use a private server or send any sensitive or classified information on the account, a person familiar with the matter said.
The existence of Kushner’s private email account was reported earlier by Politico, which also reported that other top administration officials had also used private accounts to correspond with Kushner.
