Iraqi security forces enter Mosul International Airport

Two Iraqi police officers said the airport buildings, on the southern outskirts of Mosul, were under fire from Iraqi police, the Associated Press reported.

-backed Iraqi forces launched an offensive Sunday to drive the militants from Mosul, Iraq?s second-largest city and the extremist group?s last major stronghold in the country.
"We can confirm that the Mosul airport militarily has fallen and it`s a matter of short time to fully control it," he said, according to the broadcaster.

Government forces recaptured eastern Mosul from the Islamic State, also known as ISIS and ISIL, last month after the militants seized the city in 2014.
