Crash is second in two months involving U.
warship in Asia The USS John S.
McCain collided with a merchant vessel east of Singapore on Monday, just two months after another U.
warship was involved in a fatal crash near Japan.
Search and rescue efforts are underway, the U.
Navy said, with initial reports suggesting the guided-missile destroyer suffered damage to her port side.
The Navy is examining the extent of the damage and injuries.
The collision occurred as the ship was transiting to a routine port visit in Singapore, the Navy said.
It is currently sailing under its own power and heading to port, while Singapore authorities are offering assistance.
In June, seven bodies were found in the residence quarters of the USS Fitzgerald, a U.
Navy destroyer, after it collided with a cargo ship in the sea off Japan.
The Malacca and Singapore Straits are key chokepoints of the oil trade in Asia.
About 40 percent of oil shipped by water passes through the area, as well as about one quarter of the world’s traded goods, according to the Marine Department of Malaysia.
