Catalan pro-independence parties and civic groups asked Regional President Carles Puigdemont to lift his suspension of Catalonia’s declaration of independence at 9 a. Madrid time on Oct. 16, news website El Confidencial reports, citing unidentified people at Catalan party PDeCAT.
The proposal, which includes Puigdemont asserting that the Spanish government cannot interfere with a sovereign Catalan state, was made to Puigdemont, who is under orders to clarify to the central government by 10 a. that day whether he has indeed proclaimed independence, the report says. He then should claim that as president of a sovereign state he doesn’t accept orders from other countries, under the proposal.
The anti-capitalist CUP party called for the proclamation, according to a tweet from the group, citing its spokeswoman Nuria Gibert.
“The humiliation of more than two million Catalans who voted on Oct. 1 has been definitive,” the person cited by El Confidencial says, referring to the makeshift referendum for separation from Spain held that day. “Now it’s clear that the suspension must be lifted and the Catalan republic immediately proclaimed.
